SCI-GG Member Dinner August 19th, 2026 at Zio Fraedo’s
Event Overview
Wednesday. August 19th, 2026:
Guest Speaker:

Christina Winters-Guest Presenter from UC Berkeley
Ms. Winters is a master’s student at the University of California, Berkeley in the Rangeland and Wildlife Management program. Dinner and Presentation on the California Wolf Project in California. See below for a brief overview on her background in this research.
Thank you so much for your generous support through the Safari Club International Fund, I am honored to receive it! My work and countless others wouldn’t be possible without support from generous people like you. Currently, I am a master’s student here at the University of California, Berkeley in the Rangeland and Wildlife Management program. During my time at UC Berkeley, I have had the privilege of taking a diverse array of coursework which has shaped my interests and pushed me to think critically about ecosystems in the context of unprecedented landscape-level changes that we are facing today.
This fellowship has been crucial in my last year at UC Berkeley. My thesis work is part of the larger initiative, known as the California Wolf Project, where I serve as the field lead. In this role, I work with communities, private landowners, and large timber companies to secure access permits and research agreements. In close coordination with the project director and postdoctoral researchers, I recruit and train field personnel to carry out a three-pronged data collection approach. Under my direction, our field team deployed one of the largest remote trail camera grids in California to investigate species interactions, collected approximately 1,000 scat samples to quantify wolf diet, and investigated nearly 300 wolf activity locations to classify predation events. This work is very time intensive and requires travel to and from our field house in Quincy, CA and travel throughout the state meeting with landowners and forming trust-based relationships.
This fellowship has allowed me to continue this work and travel throughout the state to consistently show up to community engagement events. Consistency is of the utmost importance and giving support and transparency to the communities we work in, and this grant has been instrumental in easing the financial burden associated with this essential travel.
Along with this, I was able to use some of the funds to coordinate multiple field-based trainings for the technicians with local ungulate biologists. From these trainings, I was able to film and produce a three-part training video series for future collaborators and project initiatives to ensure the highest standard for data collection and replication. I have also been able to present my work at multiple local, statewide, and national events with the support of this fellowship.
I presented at the 32nd Annual Wildlife Society Conference in Edmonton, Canada and the Western Section Wildlife Society Conference in Monterey. I have been able to present my preliminary findings at multiple county Fish and Game Commission meetings and host an informational presentation with National Parks partners. I have contributed research in two of our project annual reports that have been published online as well as done interviews with various media outlets, both local and national.
